FAQ

What is a Writing & Editorial Youth Mentoring Program?

It is a program geared towards young adults, where the end goal is for them to get hands-on experience in content writing and editing before getting into the real-world market. The program also works to further the apprentices’ current experience.

What will I learn?

You will immerse yourself in the activities of an independent publisher and learn how to develop a content calendar, how to use a content management system (CMS),  improve your writing (content writing and copywriting) skills, get hands-on practice with SEO (search engine optimization), etc.

Who will mentor me?

Yours truly. I will mentor you every step of the way. I have more than 15 years of professional experience in multifaceted areas (my complete portfolio is available on LinkedIn), three of which have been as an entrepreneur and strategist.

What do I need to succeed in the Editorial Youth Mentoring program?

Commitment, dedication, and willingness to learn. To learn more about our values and mission, check out the About KidPressRoom page

Do I need to have or be studying a specific degree to participate?

Potential mentees should be currently pursuing (or about to pursue) a degree in English, literature, journalism, communication, art history, or related majors.

How many students are you accepting into the program?

Because you will be working closely with me, and I want to provide you with all the tools you need to succeed, I will only be able to take on two-three mentees at a time. That said, I will only take on serious and committed students.

Will I learn only about writing or is there anything else included?

Through the program, you will work on a lot of writing, but you will also learn a lot about SEO (search engine optimization), content writing, and marketing strategies.

How will the mentorship take place?

Online. This is a remote mentorship program in which we will meet regularly through various productivity tools (Skype, GoToMeeting, Zoom, Asana). I will also be available by email, phone, and Skype.

I would like to be part of the program. Where can I apply?

Great! I can’t wait to see how committed you are. Please apply here. If you still have questions or concerns, please send me an email or reach out through the contact form, and I will get back to you soon.

“This opportunity was just what I needed to gain confidence in the skills I’ll need when going out into the editorial/writing field. During these six months, I quickly learned about SEO, marketing, and content management. This internship is the perfect start to a journey as a writer or editor!” – Autumn Hutson

“During the six months of my internship, I grew as a researcher, writer, and editor. I was able to practice both giving and receiving feedback on writing projects, gain basic skills in SEO and marketing, and learn a new content management system: WordPress. It never really felt like “work” and I enjoyed the time I spent with Kelly and the team. It also gave me a good sense of what to expect in the workplace, such as assignments and deadlines.”  – Rebekah Wallace

I learned so much, had to opportunity to read for fun again, and put to use the writing/editing information I had learned in school. I was able to not only learn so much about how to run a business, keep up a website,  and understand SEO (and how that can affect what I write!), but to receive feedback from someone who has been in the industry for so long was truly invaluable. I’m so thankful for this opportunity!” – Kylie Gardner
