The importance of
Diversity
in KidLit
A roundup
The earliest children’s literature was very Eurocentric. But it’s not just race that goes underrepresented in children’s literature.
Also missing is variety in neurodiversity, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, ability, and culture. Here are the reasons we need diversity in children literature:
1. It helps children learn to respect other identities as well as their history at a much earlier age.
2. It helps children learn about themselves and feel like they have a valid place in the world.
3. It helps children develop empathy for others and what they go through.
